BEE 199 - Ecological Engineering II/Applying Engineering to Ecosystems (Pending approval as BEE 102)

Course Description


The purpose of this course is to introduce students to common problems and solutions in Ecological Engineering, emphasizing the multiplicity of approahces to constraining, analyzing, the ethics of, and resolving challenges of ecosystem management.  The objectives of the course are to (1) introduce students to various subdisciplines within Ecological engineering and (2) foster critical thinking skills through in-class, homework, and group assignments on real-worl problems in Ecological Engineering.  Further, students will be required to select an ecological problem of interest, identify and verify resources, and synthesize and critique common solutions in a written format.  Two overnight field trips to local ecological monitoring and engineering sites will be required.

Course Objectives


The student, upon completion of this course, will possess:

  • an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • analye and interpret qualitative and quanititative data at a introductory level.
  • an ability to identify and formulate and solve engineering problems.
  • an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
  • an ability to effectively communicate in writing and speaking.
  • a knowledge of contemporary issues.
  • a broad education tounderstand impact of engineering solutions in global and societal context.
  • an ability to understand the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
